Free & Equal? (repost)

Posted: March 4, 2011 in Uncategorized

Every year December 10 is “International Human Rights Day,” as declared by the United Nations. December 10 happens to be the day that The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations.

That proclamation happened in 1948 and yet we still live in a world where young women’s noses and ears are cut off because they dare to claim certain basic human rights. In this case, Aisha, an 18-year old Afghan girl, chose to flee an arranged marriage and abusive in-laws. When her husband caught her, he punished her by disfiguring her face and leaving her to bleed to death. The right she was pursuing was that of reproductive and marital freedom. She had been sold to her husband by her parents at the age of 12 in order to pay a debt owed to her husband’s family. (Check out the details of her story.)

Why is it that in many places women are still not seen an equals to men?
Why do you think it took until 1920 (140 years) for women to get the right to vote in the US?
Finally, offer two rights you think all humans should have as guarantees.

  1. Lauren Y says:

I think that it is because some countries still aren’t quite as advanced or with the normal times as other countries and they still think they can control women. Because men didn’t want to be open minded and see that women can be treated as equals and should have all the rights they have. That we all get treated equal and that we have a right to make our own decisions.

  2. kenneth c says:

in many places women are still not seen as equal to men because the laws and culture have ben the same for a long time. it took 140 years because women finally decided to get together and stand up for there rights. i think all humans should have freedom speech, but not if it harms others, and the right to vote

  3. Maddie S. says:

I think that women aren’t as equal because of the culture and society they are looked down upon. I think it took so long for women to have rights because before they were just looked at as people who cooked, cleaned, and had babies no one cared about their opinion. Two rights people should have would be freedom of speech and the right to vote

  4. Darin H says:

In many places women are below men. I think the reason of this is the culture or belief of these people.
It took so long for women to get the right to vote because it was not a good belief to bring out. It was like bringing something new to the world.
The right to vote and free beliefs.

  5. Kylie R. says:

I think women are not always seen equal to men because in the older days men were always higher in authority and thats the way some people still see it today. I think it took so long for women to get the rights they deserve because the people weren’t ready to give them the rights. I think the rights we should be guaranteed are the right to free speech which we have and the right to mary whoever we choose.

  6. Eli Plunkett says:

She should have the right to choose who to marry, it makes the world happier, but, somehow in other countries they aren’t allowed to do that nor have they ever been. It seems america is the really only place to be free.

  7. Emily B says:

I think women are still not seen equal to men because, they are still thought of as people who are suppose to take care of the family. In the United States, women were not aloud to vote until 1920. I think the reason women were able to vote, is because they spoke out and got the word our there that they are the same as everyone else and should be treated like everyone else. I think two right all humans should have are the right to vote, and the right to have a job or to get a job.

  8. Amanda W says:

I think that women in other countries don’t have the same rights as we do, because it is either part of their religion or it’s part of their culture. We have rights, because of advancements in our government. Women stood up for what they believed in, and in other countries there may be much more serious consequences. I think that two important rights that we should all have is a right to control our own lives and also the right to be held to the same level as the opposite sex.

  9. Catrina W says:

Women are not seen as equals today because that is how it was in the past. Women are often smaller and not physically as strong so it is easy for a man to control a woman. The girl in this picture is just one example of this. This makes women afraid to stand up for themselves and I believe this is why it took until the 1920’s for them to get the right to vote. As humans I believe we should be able to make our own decisions such as who we want to marry and we should have the right to defend our decisions and make them without being afraid of someone who does not agree with the choice we make.

  10. Allison I. says:

In many places women are not seen equal to men because some places think men control the women and should have power over women. I think it took 140 years for women to get the right to vote because women didn’t have rights and the men didn’t think the women’s vote was necessary and over the years women’s right have gotten better. I think all humans should have the right to marry who they want to marry, and all humans should be able to have their own freedom of speech and have their own opinions.

  11. Alex T says:

I think that it’s that way because in most places women were seen as mothers and as people who would just do stuff for the men. I think that it should have always been that everyone was treated the same. The way some foreign countries treat women is just not even humane. Everyone but people who are incapable of making “good” decisions should be able to make their own!

  12. jordanF says:

Women are still not equal to men in some places because the government haven’t made those rights for women yet and they just don’t have a strong government in those places. I think it took that long for women to vote because many thought that women shouldn’t have any rights at all. I think that it took the government a long time to do this because the men were always ahead of everything.

  13. Tori D says:

Different countries have different governments and they don’t see women equal to men for who knows why. I think it took 140 years for women to get the right to vote because men were in charge of government and they didn’t want women to have any thing to do with the government. I think every person should be able to vote and that every person should have a freedom of speech.

  14. Jordan F. says:

I think this picture is horrible. I could never imagine having my nose cut off. I think that woman are treated unequally in these countries because their culture is different. Woman are just treated lower then men. It took until 1920 for woman to vote in an America because i believe they thought woman were not that smart compared to men. I think men and woman should have freedom of speech and i think they both should be treated equally.

  15. David S. says:

I think that one cause of the inequalities between men and women is the high population of Islamic Fundamentalists in the Middle East who believe that men and women have different rights and responsibilities.

It took a long time for women to get the right to vote because of the mindset that women weren’t as intelligent as men that had existed for thousands of years. Additionally, men were the ones who had to decide to let the women vote.

All humans should have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

  16. Riley L. says:

Why is it that in many places women are still not seen an equals to men?
Because many countries are still not full industrialized and also are communistic/dictatorial.
Why do you think it took until 1920 (140 years) for women to get the right to vote in the US?
I think that it is because no one really noticed or wanted to pay attention, until people got organized and started voicing their opinions.
Finally, offer two rights you think all humans should have as guarantees.
    1. Everything one should have the right to govern themselves in accordance with everything that applies with them such are marital status, there duty in society, and their free will to do what ever they want, except of course basic laws, ex. murder is illegal.
    2. People should have the right to leave a country if they no longer want to live there.

  17. Heth P says:

Man places in the world don’t have a stable government and law enforcement that will protect women and thats why men are more powerful than women. In Afghanistan the women don’t have any power because they have no one to watch their back, in US you know you will be aided by the cops but in the corrupted world of Afghan mens rule every part of government.
It took over 100 years for women to get their rights mainly because most of them didn’t want to speak up, and the men would torture them if they acted smart because no one could do anything about it since the men ruled.
Freedom (speech, vote, etc) and Equality are the two rights every human should share, but it is not possible in todays world.

  18. taylor lowe says:

this women had and still has every right to marry whom ever she wants to or likes to.
but looking in other country’s… they have not even a thought of who they want.
so looking at us. this isn’t such a bad thought or living area.

  19. Cyler A. says:

I think the reason why in many places still today women are not treated the same as men is because their beliefs are that women are not equal to men. I think the women didnt get the right to vote until 1920 is because the US thought that women could not handle the right to vote. i think all humans should have the freedom of speech and the right to choose their spouse.

  20. Chelsea Murphy says:

I think it is because they think that men are more powerful. I think it took that long for women to be allowed to vote becasue that was a mans job since the men were the leaders. Two rights that all humans should have would be able to have freedom of speech, people should be able to say and tell what they think without getting judged. People should also be able to pick who they marry, not have it chosen for them.

  21. Zach A says:

I think that the reason that some places women are still not seen as equals is because they are behind the US. I would say that we could be considered ahead of a lot of middle eastern countries on human rights. I think it took that long because we were afraid of what might happen. I think humans should have the right of choice, and a right to life.

  22. Mandy T says:

I think that in many areas around the world women still don’t have rights to do the same because they are over ruled by the men. I think it took a long time because everyone was used to the traditional ways everything was spouse to be. One right that i think the whole world should have is that everyone has the right to do what they want to do and not be forced into anything. Another right that i think would be a good a good idea is to have freedom of speech.

  23. Miranda Schwanke says:

The whole thing is wrong, the US took long enough to accept girls being equals, now the question is not when other countries will have equal rights but if.

  24. Makaygan P says:

Women rights are different in different countries because, they have different religious and political views. In some countries they will be put below men because men are more political and powerful over women. I think it took so long for women to have rights because the men were the ones going out and risking their lives for their country, so therefore women shouldnt have rights to vote. Two things women and men should have is the freedom to speak their mind, and freedom to marry who ever they want

  25. Emily R. says:

Many places i think are not as advanced and modern as we are. places still believe in the olden days when women were suppose to be in the kitchen and clean take care of kids and cook and men would put the food on the table have the jobs. But for us thats not how it is women have jobs and men cook and clean now to. i think it all just depends oh how advanced or modern the country is.

  26. Megan R says:

I think that many places don’t treat women as fair as men because they don’t think women are as strong as men. That men are able to do a lot more than women can. I think it took so long for women to have the right to vote because maybe at first, the women didn’t realize that voting was a big thing, and maybe they didn’t care that they couldn’t vote. But as the years went by, they started to realize that maybe it is really important, and they wanted to have a part of it. Two rights I believe everyone should have are, the freedom of speech. Everyone should be able to speak their minds freely. And another right I think everyone should have is the freedom to marry whoever they want to. You only get married once, and wouldn’t people want to be with someone they actually enjoy being with?
